Why is computer duster spray so expensive?

I saw one can for $6.99,and even at the “discount store” it costs alot.Come on now!all it is is compressed air!!!!!

It’s not compressed air, it is a liquid chemical compound that when released from the container changes from a liquid to a gas – it literally boils at room temperature but stays a liquid as long as it is pressurized in the can. Part of the boiling of the liquid makes the volume expand rapidly, which is why it comes out as a stream of pressurized “air”.

If you turn the can upside down, the liquid will come out instead of the gas. Be careful, as this liquid will freeze things very rapidly. If you spray it on parts of your body it could cause frostbite.

One of the reasons that the liquid is so expensive is that it used to be Freon (chlorodifluoromethane or dichlorodifluoromethane) in the cans, but it is suspected that that these chemicals harm the ozone layer and contribute to global warming, so they had to reformulate the liqud. There are still a lot of tariffs (fees) that are collected for liquids that potentially harm the ozone layer; it is made expensive so that people will be less likely to use a lot of it (Freon 12, chlorodifluoromethane, used to be used in almost every air conditioning system in the world. You could buy a 12 ounce can for under $1. Last time I looked, the same stuff was over $600 a pound and you needed a special license to buy it).

So, the stuff is so expensive due to the work they had to do to make a new formulation and because of taxes.
